Parking is available around the Borough of Lititz or at the Warwick High School campus. The event will be held at the band shell inside the park, which is located near the back of the park property. Park Lane will be closed to vehicles during the weekend for the safety of pedestrians on foot.

The rain date for this event is Saturday, December 7th at 6:30 pm. In the event of a postponement, an announcement will be made on the website and social media no earlier than the morning of Friday, December 6th.

Blankets are encouraged to lay down on the metal benches. Lawn chairs or sports chairs are allowed to set along the perimeter of the band shell. Please keep the center aisle clear of blankets and chairs.

There will be a short opportunity for children to meet with Santa and Mrs. Claus following the event. Please keep your visit short so that they may greet as many children as possibly during their quick visit to Lititz!

3-4 food trucks will be available and we encourage you to support their local small businesses!

A restroom trailer will be on site during this event.

The Welcome Center will be open late during this event, so stop by and check out the unique Lititz-themed gifts available to purchase!

This event is handicap accessible by using the main road through the park (it will be closed to vehicles) and the pathways around the park. The restroom trailer is not accessible, however there is an accessible portable restroom next to the bathroom house in the park. Guests needing accessibility may also be dropped off along Maple Street at the entrance next to the band shell. (Parking in that area for participants only)

This event is free to attend and a goodwill donation will be available to help offset event costs and keep this event free for everyone.

History

Christmas in the Park began as a community gathering to celebrate the re-dedication of the Nativity Creche in the Square after it was nearly removed in a lawsuit with the ACLU. It has carried on ever since for 30 years, including in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The first community Christmas Tree was donated by George Biemesderfer, who was a park board member and owner of a local Christmas tree farm. The tree still stands today just behind the flagpole at the front of the park near the caboose.

“On Nov. 30, 1994, the Lititz Area Manger Preservation Society rededicated the nativity scene. The group, with the aid of students and other community members, refurbished the figures and reassembled the creche on the square.

Dooley recalled that it was a bitterly cold evening. The thousands who gathered — the crowd was estimated to be between 1,500 and 3,000 — dubbed themselves the “Frozen Chosen.”

“Some people brought space heaters,” Dooley said. Vendors supplied food and townspeople, she noted, plugged the parking meters for people who had come from out of town to participate.” – Lancaster Newspapers 12/18/14
